Facilitated discussions between regional and national bodies of Minerals Association

Context / Scope of project

The mining associations in this country were divided both at a regional and a national level. This resulted in excess costs from duplication of efforts and the mining industry looking disorganized when various bodies lobbied at various levels - often with different positions.

The various parties agreed in principle with consolidating into one body. However, the question of “who would be in charge” and who reported to whom had prevented them moving forward.

PIP was asked to help facilitate discussions between the groups to work towards a mutually acceptable outcome.

Client achieved:

Agreed a way forward in terms of how the various organizations would work together including:

  • reporting lines
  • responsibilities
  • budget setting
  • hiring and firing

  • interviewed all parties to understand issues, concerns, areas of common ground
  • pre-syndicated possible solutions with stakeholders to identify mutually acceptable ways forward
  • briefed parties prior to discussions to ensure alignment
  • facilitated meetings with the various groups to prepare for joint working sessions
  • facilitated first joint working session and assisted the group to hammer out an “in principle” agreement
  • developed workplan for internal parties to finalise details of the final agreement
