 Results - Open Pit Coal Mine

Context / scope of project : Mine was suffering from declining coal yields, coal reserves geographically far from their wash plants, recent and ongoing high staff and management turnover and a severe wet season. PIP was introduced to implement traditional wiring (RARs), the ideas pipeline, design and implement the mine planning cycle and assist in integrating the mine plan with the fleet management system in extraction.

PIP and client achieved:

Delivered 4 out of 5 months of increased EBIT (average +US$500Kpm from an average over prior months of - US$2.7Mpm)

Increased the extracted coal to exposed inventory ratio from 72% to 91% through good planning

Maintained export product volumes in the face geological yield decline of 5%

Eliminated the re-allocations of high margin export coal to low margin local power station

Increased train volumes by 60%

Reduced dragline cycle times by 5s

Achieved mini pit volumes of 80kt pm from zero

Achieved slurry volumes of 14kt pm

$36m worth of ideas validated as ‘cash flowing’ or ‘locked in’
