Results - Commodity producers / rail / port - Debottlenecked

Context / scope of project : Coal is one of Australia's largest exports with numerous mines using the same rail and port system. However, at this supply chain the demurrage* was $1m/day. The system struggled to deliver sufficient coal even though the capacities of each component (mine loading, rail, port terminal) was sufficient. Even attempts to increase system capacity by adding trains had not resulted in more tonnes and there were 50 ships in the queue off the port. The industry needed a solution and they needed one FAST. The rail and port organizations had seen PIP's work at other sites and in conjunction with the largest mines brought PIP in to determine what needed to be done across the mines, track, rail and port to reduce this problem. The brief was to identify, gain agreement and oversee implementation for whatever changes were needed to deliver rapid improvements in throughput from the system and to reduce the associated demurrage costs. (*penalties incurred for keeping the ships waiting).

PIP and client achieved:
18% increase in throughput in 4 months by:
   - reducing system downtime
   - increasing cycle time
   - 'creating' new paths for trains
Logistics system de-bottlenecked
Reduced demurrage by $1m/day
