 Results - Underground Nickel Mine   

Context / scope of project : Underground nickel mine with a challenging geological structure was producing below target due to seismic activity and drive closure. Management want a production target of 2.0Mt ore for next year with a stretch of 2.25Mt, and no compromise to safety. The scope included production mining, development mining and mobile equipment maintenance. Underpinning this: zero harm, achieved through increased Field Leadership and targeted safety projects.

Client achieved:

40% reduction in loader (a bottleneck) breakdowns

11% increase in LHD availability

8% increase in Jumbo availability

30% increase in face advance rate (metres advance)

22% increase in drill rig productivity
5% increase in overall critical fleet availability

What we did:

Built driver trees describing mining , development and mobile equipment downtime
Identified and prioritised opportunity levers using these trees

Facilitated idea generation sessions and assisted the workforce to identify and pursue improvement ideas that provided best “bang for the buck”

Identified wiring gaps and installed and coached a cascading series of RARs (quote from GM: “my favourite meeting of the week – I feel in control and can dive into detail when necessary”)

Established and trained a post-intervention organisation structure capable of sustaining and generating with newcomers a continuous improvement culture where performance gaps are filled with improvement ideas and “working on the business” as opposed to merely “working in the business” was the norm
