 Results - Underground Copper Mine

Context / scope of project : This large underground hard rock mine had not achieved budgeted performance for years and was a costly bottleneck for the surface processing capacity. PIP was brought in to assist with de-bottlenecking, implement wiring through Results-Actions-Reviews (RARs) and introduce a management system for operational control.

PIP and client achieved:

22% improvement in tonnes to the surface

25% improvement in tonnes to passes

17% improvement in truck operating hours

21% improvement in development metres

5% improvement in production drill metres
52% improvement in development headings available

What we did:

Conducted mine de-bottlenecking and root cause analysis

Identified and implemented ideas to increase Development and Load & Haul output

Systematic reduction of repeat maintenance failures

Implemented a Management Operating System for improved planning, scheduling and operational control

Reduced production variance through the implementation of Short Interval Control mechanisms

Tightened management accountability by:
- increasing focus on completing actions
- measuring performance, and having people held accountable against reasonable expectancies and
- implementing a robust results-action-review (RAR) process
Provided extensive front line coaching
