 Underground hardrock - debottlenecking drilling

Context / Scope of project

PIP was engaged by a large Australasian mining house to work with a hard rock underground operation in Western Australia. Following a diagnostic of the operation, Drill and Blast was identified as the significant bottleneck to productivity on site.

Client achieved:

Tackling the drilling bottleneck, the client achieved (over the course of 4 months):

  • Hourly drilling rates improved by 55% (by increasing utilisation and efficiency)
  • Daily drilling rates improved 110% (by increasing availability and improving maintenance)

What we did:

The work was lead by a PIP and client team that reported to both operational and head office managers. Results were achieved through:

  • a combination of drill performance improvements and utilisation – e.g. reduction in traming time and more efficient pre-starts and shift changeovers
  • improving planning processes and set up procedures to give a more efficient set up
  • more efficient maintenance (reduction in non-productive hours)
  • implementation of KPI tracking to measure performance rapidly so that users could be coached to improve performance
