Logistics alliance to boost coal exports from Hunter Valley   A strategic alliance to maximise Hunter Valley coal exports through the efficient management of transport and port infrastructure has been officially launched.

The Hunter Valley Coal Chain Logistics Team (HVCCLT) comprises Pacific National, QRNational, coal terminal operator Port Waratah Coal Services, rail track leaseholder Australian Rail Track Corporation, track owners Rail Infrastructure Corporation and Rail Corp, and the Newcastle Port Corporation.

The HVCCLT is the first strategic alliance of its kind in Australia to maximise its export opportunities through a coordinated approach to planning.

Pacific National and Port Waratah Coal Services initiated the alliance as a trial in 2003 and since then coal chain capacity has increased by 20% without any additional capital expenditure.

HVCCLT chair Peter Winder said cooperation was yielding significant benefits for Australia.

“The model is delivering mor

e than $650m in additional annual coal exports at today’s prices,” Winder said. The HVCCLT coordinates the export of more than 80Mt of coal from 30 mines through the Port of Newcastle, which is the largest coal export facility in the world.

“By using HVCCLT to help in coordinating future investment in coal chain infrastructure we can deliver in excess of 140Mta capacity to the export industry over the next five to 10 years. This has the potential to increase coal exports from the Hunter Valley by more than $3bn annually at today’s prices,” Winder said.
